Coupling between dipole-bound and valence states: the nitromethane anion

چکیده

Nitromethane is a prototypical example for a molecule that can bind an extra electron in two fundamentally different ways forming dipole-bound as well as valence anions. The classification of the electronic states as dipole-bound or valence does in fact suggest a diabatic viewpoint, and we investigate the coupling between these two electronic states of the nitromethane anion. The coupling element W is extracted from a cut through the two lowest adiabatic potential energy surfaces by fitting of a simple avoided crossing model potential, that is, W is effectively approximated as half the smallest splitting. High level ab initio calculations are performed to compute the two states along the cut. We discuss in particular how a balance between the two very different electronic states can be achieved, and how the temporary nature of the valence anion in a large region of the relevant nuclear coordinate space can be taken into account. The autodetachment lifetime following vertical electron attachment to the neutral is computed, but the calculation of the temporary anion state turns out to be too expensive for a study of the two adiabatic surfaces, and consequently, the second adiabatic state is only included at geometries where it lies below the neutral potential energy surfaces. We find a coupling matrix element of 30 meV. On the one hand, this value is much smaller than the vertical excitation energies underlining the need for a diabatic picture. On the other hand, this value suggests rapid transitions on a mass spectrometric timescale substantiating the notion that the dipole bound state provides an efficient doorway for attachment to the valence state.

Decay dynamics of nascent acetonitrile and nitromethane dipole-bound anions produced by intracluster charge-transfer.

Decay dynamics of nascent dipole bound states of acetonitrile and nitromethane are examined using time-resolved photoelectron imaging of iodide-acetonitrile (I(-)·CH3CN) and iodide-nitromethane (I(-)·CH3NO2) complexes. Dipole-bound anions are created by UV-initiated electron transfer to the molecule of interest from the associated iodide ion at energies just below the vertical detachment energy...

On the binding of electrons to nitromethane: Dipole and valence bound anions

Conventional ~valence! and dipole-bound anions of the nitromethane molecule are studied using negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy, Rydberg charge exchange and field detachment techniques. Reaction rates for charge exchange between Cs(ns ,nd) and Xe(n f ) Rydberg atoms with CH3NO2 exhibit a pronounced maximum at an effective quantum number of n*'1361 which is characteristic of the formation ...

Electronic interaction between valence and dipole-bound states of the cyanoacetylene anion

The electron attachment properties of cyanoacetylene HCCCN are investigated with particular emphasis on the coupling between dipole-bound and valence states. As an initial step both the dipole-bound and the valence state of HCCCN− are studied separately using high level ab initio methods. Predictions for the geometry of the valence anion, the electron binding energy of the dipole-bound state, t...

Negative ions of nitroethane and its clusters.

Valence and dipole-bound negative ions of the nitroethane (NE) molecule and its clusters are studied using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), Rydberg electron transfer (RET) techniques, and ab initio methods. Valence adiabatic electron affinities (EA(a)s) of NE, C(2)H(5)NO(2), and its clusters, (C(2)H(5)NO(2))(n), n=2-5, are estimated using vibrationally unresolved PES to be 0.3+/-0.2 eV (n=1), ...

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging of iodide-nitromethane (I-·CH3NO2) photodissociation dynamics.

Femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used to probe the decay channels of iodide-nitromethane (I-·CH3NO2) binary clusters photoexcited at 3.56 eV, near the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of the cluster. The production of I- is observed, and its photoelectron signal exhibits a mono-exponential rise time of 21 ± 1 ps. Previous work has shown that excitation near the VDE of the...
